Umeå becomes rail port for the Port of Göteborg

The PortofGöteborg has worked out a new concept called RailPort Scandinavia. The idea is to bring a large number of train commuter stations in Sweden closer to the port by letting them handle customs procedures, store-keeping, documentation and other services.

The new goods station in Umeå, NLC Terminal, is a rail port terminal right from the beginning, that is when the Bothnia Line starts running in the autumn of 2010. This will largely shift long freight transports from road to railway.

The capacity of the new non-stop trains Umeå - Göteborg will equal that of 480 lorries per week. It will reduce crowds and road wear and cut the climate impact of long goods transports.

The new rail port terminal will strengthen Umeå´s position as a natural transport and logistics hub inNorthern Scandinavia . Particularly the economy in the northern parts will benefit from this. The export industry and trading companies with international products in Norrland are presented with new ways of rational goods handling and quick, on time delivery-guaranteed transports.

With the rail port concept the business world in the northern parts will gain direct access to the largest supply of transports by sea among the Nordic countries. The PortofGöteborg starts in Umeå.

The rail port terminal planned to be built at NLC Terminal in Umeå will cover approximately30,000 square metresand have room for around 1,000 shipping containers and 100 lorry trailers at the same time.
