Fast increase of freight traffic in Umeå

The increase in population was 6.4 percent from 2001 to 2007 (3.1 percent in the whole country). Combined with an expansive industry and commerce, this has lead to a steadily increasing flow of goods in and out of the region.
 
The SIKA forecast for freight traffic development 2001-2007 estimated the province o fVästerbotten to have an annual growth of 2.2 percent as for inward-bound, and 2.5 percent for outward-bound freight traffic. The target for 2010 is already met. Of the five provinces in northern Sweden, Västerbotten has the highest growth rate in freight traffic.
